If it were physically possible, fire would have blown out of Amalia’s nostrils as she huffed. Even though she knew it was possible, she still couldn’t believe Regan had gone to the police about their situation. A part of her hated getting the DNA test because it was the only evidence they had, yet it was enough for Bishop and First Lady to be arrested for kidnapping—during their Sunday church service at that.

When Angel called and told her the news, Amalia couldn’t believe it, but Kawan had pulled up their warrant information, which was unable to be denied.

As she beat against Regan’s door, Amalia tried to control herself and her anger. She didn’t like the feeling that anger consumed her with, especially when it was being directed to someone she cared about. At the sound of Regan nearing the door, Amalia took a step back.

“Amal—”

“I can’t believe you actually went to the police!”

“I told you I would.”

“Yes, but I thought after the last two times that we talked that you would change your mind.”

Regan chuckled as she crossed her arms and leaned against her doorframe. “Why would I change my mind? I told you I was going to make them pay.”

“This isn’t just about them, Regan. They have a whole congregation of people that hold them accountable as examples of how to live. Did you think about how this would affect them, too?”

“Honestly, I don’t give a fuck.”

Her words were like a push to Amalia’s body, knocking the wind out of her.

“You don’t care about me either, do you? Because I made it clear two nights ago that doing this would hurt me.”

Regan’s expression softened. “Of course I care about you, Molly. I love you. And I’m doing this for you. For us. They can’t get away with what they did.”

Amalia gritted her teeth, fighting back her tears. Quite frankly, she was tired of shedding them over this situation.

“I don’t deny that, but there are other ways.”

“What other ways, Amalia?” Regan stressed, pushing herself off the door. “If you stop talking to them, all they are going to do is harass you until you come back. Then what? We can expose them to the church and they will lose some members, but they are just going to turn this around into a testimony of how they’ve fallen short of the glory of God.” She scoffed. “This is the only way.”

Amalia’s head shook in disappointment before she turned to leave.

“I’m sorry, Molly.”

She smiled. “No, you’re not, but you’re not the first person I love to do something that benefited them more than me, knowing it would hurt me, so that’s okay. I guess this is something Little Miss Sheltered just has to get used to happening, right? They were a lot of things, but one thing I can honestly say about them was that they genuinely did whatever they could to spare me any harm and hurt.” Amalia chuckled. “You’ve been my mother for what? Three weeks now? And you’re already causing me pain.
